Born in Baterilla in the East Blue, Hayate is the son of Gol D Roger, the late Pirate King, and his lover Portgas D Rouge. He was initially raised by his uncle, Joe, until his uncle sent him away to sea to prevent the World Government from finding out about him. Unknowingly, at the age of 7, Hayate ate the Fusion Devil Fruit out of hunger, which contained the Ochi Ochi no Mi. This fruit allows him to stockpile and enhance his vitality and energy. He later met Goldbeard, who raised him as his adoptive father. Hayate is also the nephew of Date D Valant and the adoptive brother of the late Wind Fist Date D Lang, Netto, Lost Drayden, and Date Linh. Additionally, he is the younger twin brother of the late "Fire Fist" Portgas D. Ace.
Hayate has gone up against numerous global powers around him, along with his captain, starting with fighting the most powerful pirates and fleet captains of the Lost Pirates in the East Blue and moving on to clashes against the Marines, Eleven Warlords of the Sea, Cipher Pol, World Nobles, and even the Seven Emperors of the Grand Line. Hayate has gained a dangerous reputation by participating in many actions that his captain has taken, and he has defeated a number of powerful individuals affiliated with one of the Eleven Warlords.
After join together with Luffy and start a life of piracy making tremendous strides which led his bounty heavily reflecting this fact. From gaining his first bounty of 30,000,000 for defeating the second in commands of the Strongest Pirate Captains of the East Blue, to a bounty of 100,000,000 from the incident in Alabasta. After the incident at Enies Lobby, for having had a bounty of 280,000,000 before arriving at the Sabaody Archipelago, Hayate was one of Twenty-Four "Super Rookies", pirates who simultaneously reached the Red Line with bounties of over 100,000,000 shortly before the Summit War. He, the other Super Rookies, Hendrick D Ezio and Marshall D. Teach would go on to be referred to as the "Worst Generation".
Two years after the war, with his bounty increased to 380,000,000, he entered the New World and began challenging the Emperors and their allies directly, with his bounty going up to 480,000,000 after the Dressrosa Arc, and later all the way to 1,400,000,000 after the events of the Whole Cake Island Arc. Eventually, his action and his reputation end up contributing to his current bounty of 3,000,000,000.
